William Hannah McIntosh & Harriet Louisa Greenwood

William Hannah McIntosh was the third child and only son of Robert and Grace McIntosh. He was born around 1849, also in Edinburgh, and travelled to Australia with his family in 1854. William married Harriet Louisa Greenwood in 1871 and, like William’s sister Susan and her husband, also had eleven children – David John, Robert George, William James, Fanny Louise, James Hannah, Grace Rebecca Russell, Alice Maud, George Thomas, Edward Joseph and Robert Telford (twins), and Charles Henry Duncan.

At this stage, not much is known about William and his family. It is known that he was in St. Arnaud around 1876 as he was one of the witnesses at the wedding of Thomas Hardin Davidson and Rachel Maude Quine. It is also known that they spent 8 years in South Australia in the 1880s. On his death certificate, William’s occupation is listed as ‘Blacksmith’, so it is possible that he moved around with his work. William and Harriet eventually settled in the Bentleigh area, as did some of their children and their families.

William Hannah McIntosh died in 1926 and is buried at Brighton Cemetery with his wife, Harriet, who had died 4 years earlier, in 1922. Their son, Robert, and his wife, Agnes, are also buried in the same grave.
