Joseph and Annie married at the Register Office in Bristol on 14th August 1876. By the time the 1881 Census came around, they had made the move to Annie's birthplace, Cirencester, with Joseph's occupation at the time being listed as a grocer's porter, and Annie's as a tailoress. They had also had their first 3 children, Annie F., Frederick James and Joseph Henry, and were living at No 11 Queens Hill Cottages in Cirencester. Annie's sister, Agnes, then 11 years old, was also living with them. However, on the night of the 1881 Census, young Joseph Henry was actually in Bristol, staying with his paternal grandparents, Giles and Mary Chambers and his aunt, Jane Neale, at 5 Marks Court, Bristol Temple.

By 1891, Joseph and Annie had produced a further 3 children, Emma, Reginald, and Elsie, and the family was back in Bristol living at 5 Tower Street (where Giles had died in 1882). Joseph's occupation is listed on the 1891 census as a dock labourer, and Annie's as a tailoress. Joseph Henry, now 12, along with his sister Emma, 9, were living at that stage with their maternal grandparents, Henry and Hannah Fletcher at 32 Cricklade Street in Cirencester. Looking at this, it appears that Joseph Henry at least spent a large amount of time throughout his younger years with his paternal grandparents, Giles and Mary, as well as the Fletcher family. In 1901, the family had moved to Southville Place in Bedminster and the only remaining children at home were Reginald and Elsie.
Annie Chambers (nee Fletcher) died 30 December 1906 at home, 3 Southville Place, Bedminster, Bristol. The cause of death was morbus cordis and asthemia, and the informant on the certificate was her husband, Joseph James. Her burial details are not known.
