Grace Margaret Davidson ...
Grace Margaret Davidson, known as Maggie, was Robert and Margaret’s fifth child and first daughter. Like her brothers before her, she was born at Deep Creek, in 1868. Not much is known about Maggie’s earlier life, and the information on her adult life is somewhat sketchy.
At some stage, along with her sister Susan, Maggie rented a property in Mt. Egerton called ‘The Elms’. She also owned about 40 acres of land located on Kilcunda Road, in Bena, South Gippsland. The property had a six-roomed house and was situated opposite her brother Robert’s residence. The sisters ran dairy cows there, with Maggie doing the outside work, and Susan looking after the inside. It appears that Maggie and Susan were as different as chalk and cheese, and all indications are that they were both well loved and respected by their family.
Unfortunately, a photograph of Maggie has not been found, but reports indicate that she was tall, thin, and had reddish hair – which seems to be a bit of a family trait amongst the Davidson siblings. She was apparently quite strong willed, and was known to stand up to her brother, Joseph, in eye-to-eye confrontations. Maggie was known by her nephews and nieces as ‘Old Aunty’.
Maggie never married, and passed away at Korumburra Hospital in 1934 at the age of 66. She is buried at Mt. Egerton Cemetery, in the same large grave plot with her parents, Robert and Margaret, her McIntosh grandparents, and her sister, Susan.
