James Erwood was born on the 3rd November 1803 in Devizes Wiltshire and was christened on the 7th December 1803 at St Mary's Church in Devizes. He was the sixth child of William Erwood and Anne Weston, his siblings being William, John (the ancestor of Steve Erwood, who provided me with the valuable information that James was married twice), James (died in infancy), Edward, Mary Ann, Robert, Joseph, Ann (died in infancy), and Ann.
 

On the 24th December 1828, he married Ann (Hannah) Wheeler at St. James Church in Southbroom, Devizes. They had the one child, Eliza, who was born in September 1829. It appears that Ann may have died, as on the 29th September 1832, James married for the second time, to Hannah Fisher at St. Mary's Church in Devizes. On various records his occupation is listed as agricultural labourer, gardener and labourer.

James and Hannah went on to have five children:

• James, born in 1835 and married to Martha Buckingham in 1857. James Jnr is listed as being a labourer and he and Martha had 8 children.
• John, born in 1839 and died as a child in 1844.
• Anna/Hannah, born in 1846 and married to John Charles Walker in 1862. Anna and John had 8 children.
• George Henry, born in 1848 (my great-grandfather who is covered on the Erwood & Gardiner page).
• Mary Ann, born in 1850.

By the time of the 1861 British Census, the family had made the move from Wiltshire to Netley Village (near Southampton) in the county of Hampshire, where they remained. Hannah died in July 1867, at which stage James Snr moved in with James Jnr and his family, until his death in October 1877. Their place of burial is unknown at this stage.
